Retro Rallycross set to star at Beaulieu Supercar Weekend
Rallycross cars and stars will feature at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum’s Supercar Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, held against the stunning backdrop of Beaulieu’s Hampshire parkland (August 5 – 6).
The event will continue Retro Rallycross’ year-long celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the sport, having already appeared at events including the Autosport International Show in January, the British round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in May and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
The list of evocative cars attending Beaulieu will be led by the Porsche 911 that won the very first rallycross event at Lydden Hill, on February 4 1967 in the hands of Vic Elford. The car and current owner Rob Russell have played an instrumental role in celebrating the sport’s history this year, and will continue that trend at Beaulieu.
Giving a nod to the Group B era that made rallycross so famous in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Dave Halford will attend with an Audi Quattro and Rob Gibson will make a second public outing with his recently-acquired Ford RS200 replica.
Mike Endean, the founder of transmission firm Xtrac, will be present with the Ford Escort Xtrac that the British outfit created with ‘Mr Rallycross’, six-time European Rallycross Champion Martin Schanche, while a MkII version of Ford’s Escort, owned by Simon Hart, is a replica of the car that carried John Taylor to victory in the first European Rallycross Championship, in 1973. Multiple Retro Rallycross John Button Memorial Trophy winner and reigning Retro Rallycross Champion Ray Morgan will also be present with the Escort that he still races today.
Bringing proceedings right up to the present day, rallycross champion Tristan Ovenden will be present with the double-title winning Renault Clio V6 with which he won the fifth round of the MSA Supernational Rallycross Championship in Ireland last month.
Rallycross newcomer Oliver Bennett has caught the attention of those in the sport this year, in his maiden season, competing right at the front of the British RX series in his 600bhp Ford Fiesta Supercar. Fresh from fighting for the championship lead in Ireland, Bennett and his OlsbergsMSE Fiesta will be a welcome addition to the Beaulieu weekend.
“We’re delighted to attend Beaulieu this weekend with Retro Rallycross and we have a wonderful selection of cars for the public to enjoy, from the first ever winner to those capable of winning top-level events today,” said Retro Rallycross Promotor, Shirley Gibson. “It’s fantastic that with the growth of the World Championship, and the sport celebrating its 50th year, that people are recognising rallycross more and more for the fabulous sport it is, and we can’t wait to show off some wonderful cars to a new audience at Beaulieu.”
