The Retro Rallycross Championship wrapped up its 2025 season in explosive style at Lydden Hill’s legendary Firework Weekend — a festival of speed, sparks and showdowns that lit up the night sky and thrilled a record crowd.
Fans were treated to two days of non-stop retro racing action as Dan Swayland and Charlie French sealed their championship crowns in unforgettable fashion, proving once again why they’re the drivers to best in the world of Retro Rallycross.
In the Under 1659cc Championship, Dan Swayland was in a class of his own. Behind the wheel of his immaculate Escort Mk1, the reigning champ was untouchable all season, capping off a dream year by defending his 2024 title and claiming back-to-back championships.
Closest rival Joe Luke-Eastwood (MG Metro) showed huge determination after returning from a major crash earlier in the season, but it was Scotland’s Ian Biagi (Mini) who pushed Swayland hardest during the Lydden Hill showdown. Biagi grabbed a string of second-place finishes, keeping Swayland honest right up to the final flag.
Newcomers Ian Halfhide (Peugeot 205 GTi) and Peter Christmas (Toyota Corolla) also made their mark, rounding off their debut seasons in style and already turning their sights to 2026.
Sunday’s racing saw Biagi strike early with wins in the first two heats, but Swayland’s sheer consistency and precision brought him back on top, taking victory in the final and retaining the Martin Schanche Trophy.
If Swayland’s drive was dominant, the Super Retro class provided edge-of-your-seat drama from start to finish. The season-long rivalry between Charlie French (Escort Mk2) and Alan Crockett (Opel Kadett) exploded into one of the fiercest battles of the year, keeping fans roaring throughout the weekend. French flew through Saturday’s heats with blistering pace, but Crockett wasn’t going down without a fight. The two lined up side by side for the final, and what followed was a breathtaking contest, door-to-door action, heart-stopping overtakes, and crowd-pleasing commitment from both drivers. When the dust settled, it was Charlie French who crossed the line first, taking the win and with it the Super Retro Championship title.
Behind them, Allan Tapscott (Escort Mk2), Pat Doran (Escort Mk2), and Vince Bristow (BMW 318i) were locked in their own fierce fight for the final podium spot, rounding off an unforgettable finale.
The event also welcomed a stellar supporting cast including Nigel Davey (TR7 V8), Stuart Emery (Volvo 242), Daryl Ambrose (Peugeot 205), Ray Morgan (Escort Mk3), David Ewin (Ford Fiesta), Martin West (Escort Mk3), Andy Grant (Escort Mk2), and rising talent Hannah Stewart, making her Retro debut in a Talbot Sunbeam.
As fireworks faded over Lydden Hill, teams and fans reflected on a season defined by close racing, comeback stories, and sheer dedication to the craft. Retro Rallycross once again proved that classic cars and fearless driving never go out of style.
