With a perfect run of victories in the two-wheel drive Retro Rallycross Championship, BMW E30 campaigner Gary Simpson has already secured the Super Retro for over 1600cc category crown in 2019, but he arrives at his home circuit, Croft, with eyes on the biggest prize.
While Simpson leads the Super Retro points, Citroen AX campaigner Steve Cozens is top of the Retro Rallycross (up to 1600cc) class and it’s the highest points scorer from both classes that will crowned the overall champion, and receive the coveted John Button Memorial Trophy.
With Simpson eight points to the good heading to North Yorkshire, he holds the advantage, but the BMW driver will face stiff competition to maintain his unbeaten run, with former champion Ray Morgan making a return with his Ford Escort, and recent Retro RX convert Brain Hardman again taking up the fight to Simpson with his Ford Escort MkII.
Having missed the previous round at Pembrey but shown race-winning potential at Lydden Hill in August, Philip Collard will be hoping to claw back lost ground with his Renault 5, and Paul Easterbrook takes to the start line with his Toyota MR2.
Jason Bowes returns to the Retro RX field for his home event with the popular Volkswagen Golf, joined on the grid by father Stewart, who will be at the wheel, as ever, of his venerable Austin Mini.
Former Supernational champion Tony Lynch and his Team Geriatric squad have been developing their Retro RX Toyota MR2 through the campaign and showed the best pace so far last time out at Pembrey, where Volkswagen Polo racer Paul Smith also delivered a career-best performance. Both will be targeting more of the same this weekend, as Simon Hart also targets a strong finish to the season with his John Taylor replica Ford Escort MkI.
“I can’t believe we’ve reached the end of our season, it’s gone really fast. It’s been a busy year too with all of the additional events and shows we have added into our programme along the way. We’ve missed a couple of our regulars for various reasons but are pleased to hear that Ian Biagi, Barry Stewart and our reigning champion, until this weekend of course, James Harrold, all plan to be back in 2020,” said Retro Rallycross Promotor, Shirley Gibson. “We have new ideas and angles for next season and already have plans in the making. I’m looking forward to the final event, especially so with the points being tight at the top. Finally, I’d like to thank everyone for their continued support and wish all of the Retro Rallycross drivers a successful and safe weekend.”
