Porsche has been powering around the rallycross circuits of Europe since the late Vic Elford drove to victory in the first rallycross event held at Lydden Hill in 1967.
Fitting therefore, that Retro Rallycross begin their 2022 campaign, their 10th season and the sport’s 55th anniversary, with Barry Stewart as the reigning Retro Rallycross Champion, having won the title in 2021 in his own iconic Porsche 911.
Stewarts’ Porsche, once owned and driven by European rallycross star Rolf Nielson, was the 911 in which the Swedish driver raced to overall victory in the first British Rallycross Grand Prix held at Brands Hatch in 1982.
Acquired in 1989 Stewart began to prepare the car for use in British rallycross before handing the reigns over to one of the top British lady drivers, Sue Jeffrey, whose motorsport career began in 1991 where she raced a Mini in grass track racing.
In 1995 Sue entered the world of rallycross, remaining with a Mini for her first season before moving into a Sunbeam Talbot until 1998 when it was time to take over the wheel of the Porsche. After a learning year in the 911 Sue was ready to move up to the Supercar category, the first female to try her hand in the top division, where she finished a very respectable 4th overall.
Stewart, eventually took over as the main driver. Racing in UK championships before joining Retro Rallycross, and becoming a popular member with fellow competitors and Retro officials, finding event victories came easily. Looking like a champion in waiting, reliability unfortunately became an issue causing several early season retirements.
The 2021 season got off to a positive start for Stewart, the Porsche looking very much like the car to beat in the Super Retro Category. It was almost a clean sweep with overall wins and top points being collected along the way.
Currently undergoing major repairs, the Porsche driver says that the car will not be ready to compete until nearer the end of the season, aiming for the final round at Lydden Hill in November.
“Winning the championship was fantastic, doing the full season with the car being reliable and no major dramas made a big difference” said Stewart. Thanking his support crew, the engineers who have worked on the car, and his partner Mandy Price, Stewart added “it means the world to have such a strong support network, the car at the moment is being remapped to find out why we have lack of boost. The suspension needs repairs as does the bodyshell, the shell has been rallycrossing for over 40 years. I am hoping to get out in the latter part of the season. A huge thank you to Shirley and her team for their hard work and support in Retro”
The Vic Elford Porsche can still be seen at occasional rallycross events, where owner Rob Russell proudly displays the immaculate 911, which is a definite crowd pleaser with visitors to the Retro Rallycross area.
