Porsche 911 driver Barry Stewart continued his recent run of form in the Retro Rallycross Challenge by winning his third event of the season at Pembrey in South Wales, as Retro Rallycross joined the sixth round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship.
It was an action-packed day for the Retro Rallycross drivers at Pembrey, but not for Stewart who hardly put a wheel wrong all day. With fastest times in heats two and three, Stewart started from pole position for the final and led from the first corner until the last.
2014 John Button Memorial winner Ray Morgan had been fastest with his Ford Escort BDA in heat one and lined up second on the grid. He held the position on the first lap, fending off the MG Metro 6R4 of Rob Gibson, but would suffer a rare retirement when his offside front stub axle sheered off.
Stewart and Gibson battled for the lead at the front of the field – Gibson suffering from an engine misfire at high revs. Stewart drove well and saw the chequered flag first to score his third win in a row. Mini drivers Ian Shelley and Stewart Bowes fought hard for all four laps in the final, Bowes making his way into third at the start of lap four before Shelley re-took the position. In a sprint to the finish line, Shelley just hung on to score his first podium, claiming the place by just two tenths of a second. Both drivers had had to overcome small technical troubles in the heats, Shelley with broken steering and Bowes with a bent rear axle, but both were repaired at the circuit.
Midlands racer Paul Smith finished the final in fifth position, having missed the previous Retro rounds in Ireland. Lance Foster retired from the event in heat two in spectacular fashion, rolling his familiar Green and White Mini Spares machine. Mazda 323 driver Danny Greaves was forced to withdraw his entry from the event due to an engine problem.
