Rob Gibson took the honours at the penultimate round (c) MATT BRISTOW
Having missed the third qualifying heat, Gibson started on the outside of the grid for the final, but immediately took the lead as the pack headed for Chessons Drift for the first time. Three-time 2015 winner Barry Stewart had claimed pole position, but no driver dominated in the heat stages – Gibson, Stewart and James Harrold each setting a fastest time to share the front row.
Porsche 911 driver Stewart ran second on the first lap of the final, while 2014 John Button Memorial Trophy winner Ray Morgan passed Harrold for third in his Ford Escort. The positions were reversed heading towards the Devils Elbow for the first time, Harrold then trying a move around the outside of Stewart for second, only to run wide on the exit and drop back behind Morgan.

As Gibson pulled away out front, the action continued for second position on lap two. Morgan tried the same move on Stewart as Harrold had tried on him a lap earlier, but also ran wide and handed the final podium position back to Harrold, who’s Volkswagen Beetle attracted plenty of attention at Lydden Hill having been driven by Formula One star Jenson Button – son of late rallycross driver John Button – for a BBC F1 television feature at Lydden Hill the previous week.
As the cars crossed the line for the final time, Gibson claimed his second Lydden Hill victory of the season, with Stewart continuing his run of form in second and Harrold hanging onto third.
“Lydden is my favourite rallycross circuit, whatever the weather. The track dried out towards the end of the day, to give what I consider to be perfect racing conditions,” said Gibson. “I’ve had some niggling problems to overcome with the car at earlier rounds this year, but at Lydden the 6R4 ran brilliantly and handled like a dream.”
Morgan came home fourth with Scottish boarders driver Ian Biagi fifth in his ex-Roy Clark Mini. Midlands’ racer Paul Smith finished sixth in his popular Volkswagen Polo. Sadly, Ian Shelley’s Mini suffered from a broken windscreen in the heats and was unable to start the final at his home event.
