It was a clean sweep for John Cross in his Lancia Stratos on Saturday, securing the top spot in the Super Retro Class, a win he had to fight for with Ray Morgan’s MK3 Escort in hot pursuit all day. Vince Bristow (BMW) and Jamie McBain (Peugeot 205) were also on good form as the drivers got to terms with the new Pembrey track layout.
Three new cars were welcomed into the category; Jamie McBain, a newcomer to Retro, enjoyed his first appearance ending the day looking forward to Sunday’s racing. It wasn’t such a good weekend however for Nigel Davey (Triumph TR8) and Steve Cozens (Escort G3) each experiencing teething problems with their new cars, we look forward to seeing the pair back on form to challenge the rest of the pack soon.
Following the final, a delighted John Cross said “After six consecutive 2nd places, plus a few DNF’s I was starting to think, am I ever going to win again”
The Retro Rallycross class saw Tony Lynch (Toyota MR2) dominate all day against Simon Hart (Escort MK1) Paul Smith (VW Polo) and Rob Buckmaster in his (XR2 Fiesta). Lynch shot off the line taking the lead in the final, resulting in an easy win.
For day two, Ray Morgan made it clear from the start of racing that the challenge to take the advantage off John Cross was on; the pair produced some of the best racing of the weekend. Cross took the win in the first two qualifying runs with Morgan coming out on top in the third.
Nothing separated Cross and Morgan in the final, but this time it was the Escort that took overall victory, leaving Cross to settle for second place. McBain stayed close to pick up third in the standings with Bristow coming in fourth.
“This weekend was my first event with Retro Rallycross in the 5 Nations BRX for rounds three and four at Pembrey, and what a fantastic weekend we had” said Jamie McBain, “Shirley and Maria made myself and my team feel right at home in the paddock and the work they do behind the scenes is amazing. We went with no expectations for the weekend and managed to come away with 3rd place in round four, the driving from the chaps was clean all weekend and we can’t wait for the next round”
In the Retro RX class, it turned out to be another disappointing day for Rob Buckmaster eventually retiring with gearbox failure in the XR2. Lynch took a repeated clean sweep, Hart kept a respectable one second gap behind in the final to take second with Smith coming in third.
“A great weekend at Pembrey Circuit for the Retro’s, made even more so with the excellent weather we had. Some drivers were missing following breakages during their last outing which, although disappointing, didn’t deflect from our drivers putting on a good show” said Championship Manager Shirley Gibson, “Three new cars added into the mix and a new driver, in the form of Jamie McBain which was fantastic, we always enjoy being able to welcome new faces to the group and Jamie fit in well with everyone. I was pleased to see the TR8 back in Retro, I know that once Nigel gets on top of issues found and more used to driving such a beast, we can expect to see some great action along with that of the new ride for Steve Cozens, his Escort G3 is amazing, the move up to the Super Retro series looking like a positive one, our next appearance will see us cross the channel, returning to the Glosso Circuit in Belgium, one of the popular European venues with British drivers in the past”
