In a weekend started wet but dried out to produce perfect racing conditions Lynch took the win on day one of the Welsh double header in his immaculate Toyota MR2, beating Retro lady driver Pip Davey (Peugeot 205) who finished in second place with Rob Buckmaster, Paul Buckmaster and Simon Hart bringing up the rear. Hart (Ford Escort MK1) was the first casualty when engine failure halted his weekend.
On day two the Retro Rallycross final produced some surprises, and it was Davey who finished on top. Her maiden win alongside second place the previous day, provided her best results to date, making the disappointing start to the season a distant memory.
In the Super Retro division Lee Wood, in the ex-John Welch liveried car, proved very much to be the man to beat where he finished day one ahead of triple Retro Rallycross Champion Ray Morgan (Escort MK3). Morgan, a popular driver with a huge following, put up his usual determined battle to try to take first place, keeping David Ewin in the Ford Fiesta behind. John Cross tangled with Alan Tapscott, a move that brought a disappointing end to the weekend for Devon racer Tapscott.
Day two saw a repeat of day one with Lee Wood once again dominating and taking pole position in the final. Morgan, despite his efforts, was unable to do anything about his second-place position, finishing ahead of Paul Pascoe, John Cross, and David Ewin. Cross was later demoted one place for a clash with Ewin who, just like Tapscott, left with damage to his car.
“We enjoy racing at Pembrey, and the Retro’s produced some good racing on both days” said championship coordinator Shirley Gibson. “We are pleased with the new-look series that produces a champion in each of our main categories. To have the Retro Rallycross under 160cc champion revealed with two races still to run leaves us with an exciting finale to see who will finish as runner-up. Great to see Pip do so well, she had been disappointed at the start of the season, hampered with technical issues that now look to be sorted. In the Super Retro division Lee Wood needs to hold his nerve at Valkenswaard and Lydden Hill if he’s to take victory in his first season racing in Retro Rallycross and lifting the John Button Memorial Trophy once the dropped scores have been applied. Still lots to play for and I’m looking forward to seeing how the remaining races unfold.”
The Championship will move to Holland, after a break away from the iconic Valkenswaard circuit, for rounds 6 and 7 on September 16/17, before returning to Lydden Hill for the 5th November Firework Finale.
