The Retro Rallycross Championship roared into life over the Easter weekend at Lydden Hill Race Circuit, once again delivering the largest support-category entry on the MSUK British Rallycross Championship bill. A blend of new faces, fresh machinery and division changes gave the 2026 season opener a distinctly revitalised feel.
Reigning 2025 Retro Rallycross Champion Dan Swayland made his much-anticipated step up to the Super Retro ranks. With his new car still under construction, Swayland campaigned the proven TNC machine that previously delivered multiple successes for Charlie French, who is not defending his Super Retro crown this season.
Swayland joined a competitive Super Retro field, where Stuart Emery immediately signalled his intent. Armed with a significantly upgraded Volvo 242 following a winter engine change, Emery looked like the driver to beat in the opening stages. Nigel Davey also impressed early on in his powerful Triumph TR7 V8.
However, it was Devon’s Andy Grant who emerged victorious, taking the win in the final aboard a Ford Escort Mk2 previously raced by former Super Retro champion Lee Wood. Emery secured third place on the podium after a strong showing throughout the day.
A host of familiar names returned for another Retro campaign, including Ray Morgan (Escort Mk3), Vince Bristow (BMW E36), Alan Tapscott (Escort Mk2), Gary Simpson (BMW E30), Pat Doran (Escort Mk2) and Hannah Stewart (Talbot Sunbeam). Newcomer David Brown also joined the grid in a Ford Escort.
In the fiercely contested Under 1660cc category, Jon Wood delivered a commanding performance. Driving the John Welch tribute Ford Escort Mk2, Wood dominated proceedings with two heat wins before sealing victory in the final. Ian Biagi proved his closest challenger, though the Scotsman was ultimately unable to counter the Escort’s power advantage in his Mini Clubman.
Joe Luke-Eastwood also drew attention in a newly transformed MG Metro, now presented as a Rob Gibson tribute. Backed by RGV Motorsport, Eastwood is set to contest the full championship in the striking yellow-liveried machine.
Round two produced more of the same in Super Retro, with Lee Wood mounting a strong challenge to claim second place. Swayland continued his solid start to life in the category, completing the podium in third.
In the Under 1660cc field, it was once again business as usual for Jon Wood, who maintained his advantage over a competitive pack including Simon Hart (Escort Mk1), Ian Halfhide (Peugeot 205), Peter Christmas (Toyota Corolla GTi), Paul Buckmaster (Vauxhall Nova) and Luke-Eastwood.
The championship now heads to Mondello Park for rounds three and four on May 23–24.
