This weekend (March 16th and 17th) the 2013 MSA British Rallycross Championship is to get underway at Lydden Hill. A grand total of 114 cars will take to the one mile ‘home of rallycross’ circuit, with 2011 and ’12 British champion Julian Godfrey leading the entries.
Incorporating the second round of the 2013 Belgian Rallycross Championship, stars from across Europe will battle Britain’s finest at the two day Lydden meeting. Title holder Godfrey (Ford Fiesta) will certainly have some competition this weekend, as 16 supercars are set to thrill the crowds.
Kevin Procter, Andy Grant, ‘Mad Mark’ Watson, Steve Mundy and Godfrey’s friendly rival Pat Doran (Citroen DS3) lead the British entry ahead of this weekend. They’ll certainly have some company with Koen Pauwels and Jos Jansen leading the mightily strong Belgian entry heading to the idyllic Kentish countryside.
As well as entrants from Britain and Belgium, two European Rallycross regulars are to join the flame-spitting Supercar field. Monster Energy-backed Andreas Bakkerud in his mean Citroen DS3 is using the event as a test ahead of a full European campaign, along with Rallycross veteran Ronny Scheveneels debuting his brand new Peugeot 207.
In the support classes, the quality of entrants is just as strong. 2012 champion Ash Simpson heads the MSA Supernational field, entering a full 2013 season in his rapid Lotus Exige. Simpson should be prepared for a stern test this weekend, as Mike Howlin (Ford Fiesta), Steve Cozens (another Lotus Exige) and Todd Crooks (BMW Mini Cooper S) lead the great class.
One to certainly watch for this weekend is Darren Scott in the Super 1600 category. In memory of Ryan Lawford – who tragically passed away in January – Scott is to run his Suzuki Swift in all-red, raising money for the ‘Demelza Hospice.’ Scott will have a tough challenge with Davy Van Den Branden (Citroen DS3) and Marcel Snoeijers (Renault Megane) joining the popular class – both will be racing new cars and are definitely two to watch.
The ever-popular Swift Sport category sees another competitive field line up at Lydden. Johny Bean and Graham Rodemark will be fighting for the title this year and are both set for this weekend, along with James Knight-Coney who returns to the class.
Kevin Hansen heads the MSA Junior Rallycross category for Lydden, and is sure to fight with James Ross and Charlie Bean in what will be another competitive category. Brimming with entries for round one is the ever-growing Hot Hatch class – 13 super-close hatchbacks will flood the Lydden start line come Saturday.
In a surprise switch of class, Tony Lynch moves from Swift Sports to BMW Mini’s for this season. He should expect a good race with the experienced Hudson brothers Kris and Keifer leading the entries. The ever-mad Kevin Feeney will be chasing glory at Lydden in the RX150 ‘buggies;’ Tommy Keet and Marc Scott along with many more of the sideways ‘buggies’ will join him.
Rewinding the rallycross tape this weekend will be the Retro Rallycross series. As last year, another class entry is ready for Lydden. Rob Gibson in his Metro 6R4 will be one to beat, as too Lydden legend Ray Morgan aboard his reliable Ford Escort.
The British contingent have turned out in force for Lydden. They’ll be supported by an array of Belgian’s from across the Channel who will make a very welcome return to Kent. In the SuperNationals min 2000cc, the field is so varied it is impossible to predict: cars from Rover 25 to Opel Kadett are guaranteed to entertain.
For the SuperNationals plus 2000cc, Volvo’s are the make to look for. Steven Maris in his 242 is tipped for glory, the Belgian sure to drift his unconventional Volvo at any given opportunity. Finally, Jos Sterkens in yet another Volvo is top of the Touring Car list. He’ll be challenged by Ivo Van den Brandt and Mandy Kasse who replaces her Opel Astra with a modern Ford Fiesta for 2013.
