Taking part in the first of four rounds over the course of the Retro RX season, the four-wheel drive Group B monsters will be driven this weekend by former European Championship contender Rob Gibson and rallycross newcomer Roger Thomas.
Also racing a four-wheel drive car will be Irishman Derrick Jobb, who will compete in a Ford Escort Cosworth, the car eligible for Retro RX as the ‘newest’ model on the grid, just fitting inside the end of 1991 cut-off date.
While Gibson, Thomas and Jobb will have the benefit of four-wheel drive traction on the Lydden Hill circuit, the trio will face a strong challenge from Retro RX round one winner James Harrold, who returned to the series after an absence of two years with his rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle, former Retro RX champion Ray Morgan with his rear-wheel drive Ford Escort and the returning Barry Stewart.
Forced to miss the opening round due to a parts supply problem, multiple Retro RX race-winner Stewart will be back in action this weekend at his home circuit, driving the Porsche 911 that won the very first MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix in 1982.
Another driver that can call Lydden Hill is home circuit, Christopher Dawkins, will make his Retro RX debut in a Peugeot 309, joined by Vauxhall Astra racer Gary Dixon and Toyota MR2 contender Paul Easterbrook in the Super Retro (over 1600cc) sub division this weekend.
Mini Clubman racer Stewart Bowes will aim to produce more giant-killing acts against the more powerful machinery at Lydden Hill. Currently second in the Retro Rallycross (up to 1600cc) standings, Bowes will be joined on the Lydden Hill grid by the similar cars of Ian Biagi and Terry Moore. Steve Bowie made his Retro RX debut in a Vauxhall Chevette in round one at Silverstone and will be back in action this weekend. Simon Hart made his first rallycross start last season and has become a Retro RX regular with his Ford Escort, while Mark Finch will join Retro Rallycross for the first time at the traditional Lydden Hill Easter Bank Holiday Monday event, racing a Ford Fiesta.
“It’s great to be returning to Lydden Hill for the traditional Easter event, everyone’s favourite venue. My first visit to Lydden was 48 years ago and the cars racing back then were of a type that you see in the Retro Rallycross Championship today. It’s wonderful to be able to turn back time like this and mind blowing to find just how many people love the early years as much as I do,” said Retro Rallycross Championship Manager, Shirley Gibson. “Rallycross has evolved to a level that was unimaginable all those years ago; the technology that goes into the modern day Supercar is fantastic, but of course our cars were the Supercars back in their day.”
“Interest is growing in the series which can be seen by increased entries, the future is looking good for Retro Rallycross. The season opener at Silverstone was good for us, the weather was our only real negative. The highlight this weekend is to have Barry back in the Porsche taking on James [Harrold] and Ray [Morgan]. You can expect lots of excitement from that trio. We are of course also looking forward to welcoming our regular and new drivers to Lydden Hill, and hope they put on a fantastic display for the fans.”
