The penultimate weekend of the 2022 Championship took place at Pembrey Race Circuit in South Wales over the bank holiday weekend.
John Cross (Lancia Stratos) and Tony Lynch (Toyota MR2) started the event on equal points, sharing the top standings, with each having little to do to secure the Championship titles of their respective divisions.
Qualifying saw Lynch under pressure once more from the opposition of Terry Moore (Austin Mini), Rob Buckmaster (Ford Escort MK1), Paul Smith (VW Polo), Simon Hart (Escort MK1) and Dan Swayland, making his maiden appearance in the Retro Rallycross under 1600cc category in his immaculate Ford Escort MK1.
In the final on day one it was Lynch who took the overall win with Buckmaster second and Moore taking the third podium place.
In the Super Retro Category John Cross had lots to do with hard opposition coming from three times Retro Rallycross Champion, Ray Morgan in his Escort MK3, Alan Tapscott (Ford Escort MK2), Steve Cozens (Escort MK3) and Nigel Davey who returned in his Peugeot 205, all looking like a threat to the super quick Lancia.
Day one ended with Cross taking the overall win with Tapscott second followed by Davey.
Day two and round 7, saw retirements in both divisions; Simon Hart experienced engine issues as did Terry Moore, who was forced to retire with an oil breather problem.
Swayland had a mixed weekend consisting of early race issues, once sorted he was able to take a well-earned podium place on the second day of racing joining Buckmaster and Lynch who took away another maximum point score to add to his tally.
A different story for Cross in his final, having made his usual blinding start off the line, contact with Morgan on the first lap put him out of the race and unable to get going again. It was Tapscott who eventually took the win with Morgan coming in second and Davey third.
‘’ It was an exciting weekend, Pembrey is a favourite of ours and in this, our penultimate weekend’s racing the South Wales venue didn’t disappoint’’ said Championship Coordinator, Shirley Gibson. ‘’our two class champions were revealed, and I congratulate John Cross and Tony Lynch on a great result along with all our competitors who have done a fantastic job all season. The final race of the year is shaping up to be a bit of a cliff hanger once again, we are looking forward to seeing which one will come out on top, hoping that the only fireworks that weekend will be those supplied by Lydden Hill Race Circuit as we celebrate what has been another great 5 Nations British Championship season.’’
