The Retro Rallycross Championship returned to South Wales for rounds 6 and 7 in an event that produced excellent racing and surprising results.
Day one of the Welsh double header, saw Pat Doran and Charlie French in their MK2 Escorts, looking to add to their current scores and remain as the top pair in the Super Retro Category.
Doran was expected to push hard, hoping to close the gap on the points lead that French has. And, being joined on track by John Cross (Lancia Stratos) Allan Tapscott (Escort MK2) Nigel Davey (TR7) Ray Morgan (Escort MK3) Stuart Emery (Volvo 242) and Vince Bristow’s BMW, this was set to be a great day’s racing on a track that has limited overtaking opportunities.
It was Doran who took the early lead, winning the first qualifier with Nigel Davey in hot pursuit behind, with Stuart Emery finishing third.
Charlie French finished on top in the next two qualifiers to take pole position in the final race of the day, which he won ahead of a challenging Pat Doran. John Cross came over the line in third place, followed by Allan Tapscott, Nigel Davey, Ray Morgan and Stuart Emery. Vince Bristow had a mixed start to his race weekend with technical issues causing him to retire in the third heats.
In the Retro Rallycross class Ian Biagi returned for his second appearance of the season in his Mini, with Paul Buckmaster also returning after making what he hoped would be reliability changes, to the Vauxhall Nova. Tony Lynch was looking to boost his points score having missed the first two rounds of the championship to move closer to the current leader Dan Swayland, who once again proved very impressive in his MK1 Escort.
It was Dan Swayland who took the first win in the qualifying heats ahead of Tony Lynch (Toyota MR2), Ian Biagi, Simon Hart (MK 1 Escort) and Paul Buckmaster. Swayland took the second heats with Lynch finishing ahead of him in the third heats.
In the final Dan Swayland hung on to the back of Tony Lynch, making several attempts for an overtake which he failed to make stick to finish in second place with Ian Biagi, Simon Hart and Paul Buckmaster bringing up the rear.
Day Two brought with it some challenging weather conditions that was set to mix up the order. It was Nigel Davey who set the bar with two heat wins in the TR7 ahead of Charlie French. In the third heats roles were reversed, with Charlie French finishing ahead of Nigel Davey followed by Stuart Emery, Pat Doran, John Cross and Ray Morgan.
In the final it was Nigel Davey who sat on pole alongside Charlie French and Stuart Emery. John Cross and Pat Doran shared the second row with Ray Morgan behind. Determined to bring the TR7 to the flag first Davey was able to hold on the lead, with Pat Doran taking the second spot ahead of John Cross, Stuart Emery Charlie French and Ray Morgan.
The Retro Rallycross category saw points leader Dan Swayland and Tony Lynch continue the previous days battle in the qualifying runs. Swayland took the first and third heats to ensure a pole position in the final. Sharing the front row with Tony Lynch and Ian Biagi, Lynch was first away when the lights turned green, with Swayland pushing hard from behind. Having made failed attempts to pass the Toyota, Swayland finally pulled off a spectacular move getting ahead, and pulling away with ease, to take the chequered flag. Ian Biagi finished his weekend in third ahead of Simon Hart and Paul Buckmaster.
Charlie French and Dan Swayland remain on top in their respective categories but with a diminished lead, leaving lots still to be played for when the championship returns to Lydden Hill for the final two rounds of the season on 2nd and 3rd November.
