Joining forces with the Irish Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park (Ireland), Retro Rallycross headed a field of classic machinery over the weekend of 25/26 May for rounds 3 and 4 of the Retro Rallycross Championship.
Dan Swayland finished each race just shy of getting ahead of the Toyota MR2 of Tony Lynch in the Retro category. It was Lynch who took top honours at the end of play, followed by Swayland and Hart, with Rob Buckmaster bringing up the rear.
In Super Retro Charlie French continued the top form he had shown at rounds 1 and 2 at Lydden Hill over the Easter weekend, but it was guest driver David Crockett who took the win in the final ahead of French and Pat Doran, Allan Tapscott and Stuart Emery.
John Cross, Jamie McBain and David Ewin were all early retirements, taking no further part in the weekends racing.
Day two and round 4 saw the two categories combined on the grid, with Lynch once again coming out on top in the Retro Rallycross category ahead of Buckmaster and Swayland, leaving Rob Buckmaster holding a slim lead in the championship standings over Dan Swayland, who is trailing by 2 points with Simon Hart in third.
It was roles reversed at the front in Super Retro; Pat Doran drove brilliantly all day as he and Charlie French battled to take the overall win. It was a delighted Doran who stormed over the finish line to take the chequered flag and his first Retro Rallycross win, ahead of French and Stuart Emery in third, to bring home his first silverware earned in his fabulous Volvo 240.
The win moves Doran into second place in the championship with Allan Tapscott lying in third.
Stuart Emery said afterwards “the transition from FWD to RWD is taking a bit of getting used to, I let Supercar driver Tristan Ovenden drive the car at Lydden a few weeks ago. I watched how he had no problems in throwing the Volvo into and out of the corners. Taking on board his driving style has helped me on my learning curve, I feel a lot more comfortable now behind the wheel.”
The Championship will return to Lydden Hill on 17 August for round 5.
