The 2024 Retro Rallycross Championship got underway with a bumper entry for rounds one and two at the traditional Easter rallycross weekend at Lydden Hill Race Circuit.
In the Super Retro category on Saturday, Charlie French, Barry Stewart and Paul Barrett took a win each in the qualifying races, but in the final they could do nothing to stop a determined John Cross who stomped home in his Lancia Stratos to take his first win for quite some time, with Stewart and French pushing hard from behind.
A delighted John Cross said, “I’m very happy with the winter mods, and pleased nothing fell off after such an extensive rebuild, I’m now looking forward to doing it all again on Monday”.
The Retro Rallycross class saw Terry Moore dominate in his Mini chased hard by Dan Swayland, Ian Biagi and Rob Buckmaster. In the final Moore took the expected victory in front of Biagi and Buckmaster with Swayland bringing up the rear.
On Monday, and round two, it was business as usual for Barry Stewart, Paul Barrett and Charlie French in the opening qualifier, French took the win in the second heats with Pat Doran, having got to grips with his MK2 Escort, finishing a close second.
French, Cross, and Doran brought the pack home in the third heats while a disappointed Barry Stewart was left in the paddock having found a large part of the gearbox housing missing following his earlier victory, and resigned to being a spectator for the rest of the day.
It was no surprise to see French bring his MK2 to the chequered flag first in the finals with a delighted Pat Doran in second place ahead of John Cross in third.
“It was a dream weekend for the Tuesday Night rallycross team”, said French, “Full credit to the car and the team support network that had every base covered. We’re all over the moon with the result and buzzing for the next one. It was a great weekend, and the Retro paddock is a great place to be. I’m making memories for sure”.
Terry Moore was on his usual form in the first heats but failed to finish the second with a broken diff bringing his race weekend to a close, leaving the way clear for Swayland to dominate. However, it was Scotsman Ian Biagi who took the win in the final, ahead of Simon Hart who had now sorted the electrical problem he’d been struggling with all weekend, to bring his MK2 home in second place ahead of Rob Buckmaster in his Fiesta XR2.
Ian Biagi said, “I’m pleased with my first win in a while, it’s been a long time coming, Retro Rallycross bridges the generations, it’s enjoyable to see it still inspiring the young and old alike by maintaining its true essence, reflecting the ethos vehicles of their different periods in all their authenticity”.
“What a great opening event”, said Shirley Gibson. “The entry this weekend was as much about quality as quantity, we have nine cars who were not able to join us this weekend for a variety of reasons proving, if proof was needed, just how much the Retro Rallycross Championship has grown in recent years. I couldn’t be more pleased with how things are going and look forward to presenting more Retro Rallycross as the season progresses”.
The Retro Rallycross Championship will move to Mondello Park in Ireland on 25/26 May for rounds three and four.
