The Retro Rallycross Challenge returns to Pembrey this weekend for the second of two visits to the South Wales Circuit in 2015.
In the first four weekends of competition this season, Retro Rallycross has witnessed four different winners. So far, only one driver has won twice in the MSA British Rallycross Championship category – Barry Stewart winning on both days at the recent double-header event at Mondello Park in Ireland, driving his Porsche 911.
Stewart has also previously gone well at Pembrey, the host circuit of the sixth event of the year, but will have his work cut out if he is claim victory. MG Metro 6R4 driver Rob Gibson has competed at just one competitive Retro Rallycross Challenge event this season – at Lydden Hill – where he won. He also ran as part of the Retro Rallycross demonstration at the British round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at the same circuit, and will be hoping to win again this weekend at Pembrey.
Reigning John Button Memorial Trophy Winner, Ray Morgan, won at Pembrey in May and will be hoping to repeat that form on a circuit he historically goes well on, but will face a stiff challenge from Mini driver Lance Foster, who can never be discounted from performing a giant-killing act at any circuit in the UK.
Stewart Bowes will compete in similar Mini, Bowes’ machine having been repaired following a big roll at the World Championship event, in the hands of son Jordan. Ian Shelley will field another of the three iconic Minis on the Retro Rallycross grid this weekend.
Volkswagen Polo driver Paul Smith and Mazda 323 runner Danny Greaves had a day-long tussle for position when the British Rallycross Championship last visited Pembrey in May. Both drivers missed the trip across the Irish Sea to Mondello Park but will resume their battle this weekend.
Missing from the entry list is the Volkswagen Beetle of Croft victor, James Harrold, the car still undergoing transmission repairs, and the Mini of Ian Biagi who still has work to complete to his engine before his next Retro Rallycross outing. Biagi and Harrold will return to the Retro Rallycross grid at the next round for the traditional Lydden Hill August Bank Holiday event.
The second visit of the year to Pembrey can be watched live online via Livestream, with review programmes being aired on British Eurosport and Premier Sports following the event – listings and information will be published on the MSA British Rallycross Championship website, here.
