Multiple World Hot Rod Champion Lee Wood has won the 2023 Super Retro Rallycross Championship to become the next holder of the John Button Memorial Trophy at the end of what has been an impressive year, in his first full Retro Rallycross season. The Ford Escort MK2 presented in the livery of ex rallycross champion and British star John Welch, made the car an instant hit with rallycross fans and worthy of receiving the best presented team of the year.
Tony Lynch had already done enough to secure the Retro Rallycross under 1600cc championship last time out at Pembrey.
As the Retro drivers lined up at Lydden Hill points were close, and the chase was on to find the runners up in each of the categories. As racing unfolded, in challenging weather conditions, it was Lee Wood who dominated the Super Retro’s during Saturday, with Devon racer Nigel Davey producing some quick times in the TR7 and finishing in second place in the first two heats.
The smaller engine cars were equally as impressive, with Dan Swayland in the Escort MK1 and Ian Biagi’s mini taking a win each in the qualifying heats.
Sunday couldn’t have started differently, with a dying out circuit and blue skies for the final push to pick up those last chance points, Lee Wood came out once more on top form, with Jamie McBain getting his Peugeot 205 into the mix, to finish ahead of the Escort of Allan Tapscott in the final qualifying heat of the weekend.
Dan Swayland shot off the line ahead of Ian Biagi and Simon Hart in their final race of the day with Rob Buckmaster’s Fiesta making a late challenge and swapping places with Hart just in time for the chequered flag.
As expected, it was Lee Wood who led throughout and taking the pack home with Barry Stewart finishing in second place in his Porsche 911 ahead of BMW driver Vince Bristow. Stuart Emery, who was busy getting to grips with the Volvo 242, in his maiden appearance, was hounded by Allan Tapscott’s Escort to the end bringing the 2023 championship to a close.
