Congratulations to Grzegorgz Kalinecki on becoming the first ever ‘Retro Rallycross Driver Of The Year’.
The final was a very close with just five points between first place man Ray Morgan and Grzegorz. Ray had led the series from the start, but was hampered by weather conditions that clearly suited the front wheel drive machine of Lance Foster. The track failed to dry out enough to turn the tables for the rear wheel drive Mk3 Escort that had thrilled all season with classic sideways driving that transported us back to the era when these cars were indeed the ‘Super Cars’ of the day.
Gary Dixon lay down the gaunlet in the first heats by scoring the fastest time in what was his first outing in the series. Other newcomers, Dave Black and Paul Smith were clearly enjoying their first outing on the Retro Rallycross Grid. Rob Gibson, didn’t get to terms with his racing until the Final, when he delighted the crowds by charging from 6th place on the grid to attack for the lead by the first corner. It was Kalinecki though who had the upper hand and won the A final and the series outright with Rob Gibson second and Lance Foster third.
