Ray Morgan, Pembrey winner in his Mk3 Escort BDA
Volkswagen Beetle driver James Harrold qualified on pole position for the final, having set fastest times in the first and third heats. He had missed the second while his team tryed to resolve a mechanical niggle.
Green and White Mini Spares driver Lance Foster was fastest in the second heat to line up alongside Harrold, with Morgan on the outside of the front row. Harrold made the best start to lead on lap one, but Morgan was close behind and pushed Harrold hard for the opening two laps. Foster ran in third while Retro Rallycross newcomer Jordan Bowes, racing in only his second ever rallycross event was fourth.
With Harrold’s Beetle struggling without a full selection of gears, Morgan made a move for the lead stick on the third lap, as Harrold dropped into the clutched of Foster, eventually beating the Mini man to second place by just a second at the finish line. Bowes drove an impressive race to finish fourth while the Volkswagen Polo of Paul Smith and Daniel Greave’s Mazda 323 battled it out over fifth position, Smith coming out on top in his less powerful machine.
Ian Shelley had qualified on the second row of the grid for the A final but was forced to retire due to feeling unwell.
The next event for the Retro Rallycross team will be in support of the British round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill later this month. More news soon.
