The 2024 season will pick up from where the last one ended, at Lydden Hill Race Circuit, where the Retro Rallycross Championship will contest rounds one and two of what is expected to be yet another year of an exciting challenge in both the Retro Rallycross and Super Retro categories.
The eclectic mix of cars have grown to include new members who will be joining us this season, appearing at our opening rounds are, Paul Barrett from Ireland, Ashford driver, Martin West, Pat Doran and Charlie French, who will pilot their Ford Escort’s in Super Retro.
Devon racer Steve Cozens is making a welcome return to our grids, having moved up into Super Retro in the immaculate Renault 5 previously raced by Phil Collard, meanwhile John Cross reports that he has carried out extensive work on his Lancia Stratos during the winter break, returning to put in a full challenge where he says he’ll be battling for the title.
Crowd pleaser Barry Stewart is back in his fabulous Porsche 911 chasing his second championship title. Whilst four times Retro Rallycross Champion, Ray Morgan will be looking for a fifth title his Ford Escort Mk3. Stuart Emery is looking forward to getting to grips with the Volvo 242 in what he hopes are better weather conditions than on his maiden event. Things won’t be so easy though as the rest of the field are more than capable of taking the top step on the podium at each round.
In the hunt for the championship title will be Alan Tapscott, Vince Bristow, and Nigel Davey, who complete the entry for the Super Retro category at Lydden Hill.
The Retro Rallycross Championship will see Simon Hart and Dan Swayland back out in their MK1 Escorts, along with Rob Buckmaster in his Ford Fiesta XR2. Ian Biagi and Terry Moore make up the field in their Mini’s.
Missing from the category will be Lady driver Pip Davey, as she continues her recovery from the injuries sustained when her Peugeot 205 hit the banking at Lydden during the final round of 2023. You can expect Pip to be back on pace and challenging for podium positions when she returns.
Tony Lynch is another competitor who will miss the first two rounds, hoping to be back out in time for the trip to Mondello Park. When he does get back behind the wheel of his Toyota MR2 Lynch will do so having moved up into the Super Retro Category following an engine upgrade.
Retro Rallycross Championship coordinator Shirley Gibson said “with the winter break over we are looking forward to getting our championship underway and cars back out on track, I’m pleased to welcome Paul, Charlie, Pat, and Martin to Retro Rallycross, and looking forward to bringing news of others who are planning to join us as the season progresses. The Lydden Hill Easter rallycross weekend is always a special event where we hope to see lots of our Retro race fans popping along to say hello”.
