The 2012 season saw the first Retro Rallycross Challenge get off to a flying start. Designed to cater for classic and historic cars in Rallycross the series was immediately popular with spectators and competitors alike, with more cars added to the series as the season progressed.
Ray Morgan entertained at every round, his talent for classic sideways driving delighting the crowds and providing those who had not witnessed it before, an insight to what was once a Rallycross ‘Super Car’. It was Grzegorz Kalinecki however that who took overall victory having put in a stunning performance at the final round in his Lancia Delta Integrale.

Grzegorz is back for the first round to defend his 2012 title against a field that sees Rob Gibson return in his famous yellow 6R4 alongside newcomers Mark Thomas; Ford Anglia, Paul Smith; VW Golf as well as Retro Rallycross regulars Barry Stewart, Marc Griffin and the Mini’s of Ian Biagi and Lance Foster.
Russell Crampton has had to delay his first appearance until later in the season; Russell was expected to pit his Mini against the green & white brigade this weekend, but suffered a blown engine during the test day at Lydden 2 weeks ago. James Harrold will also be missing from the pack, unable to complete the work to his VW Beetle in time, but you can expect to see James putting in his usual sterling performance later in the season.
Retro Rallycross drivers report that they have cars currently under construction and amongst those yet to be introduced to the 2013 challenge series will see the return of Tommy Graham in a Ford Escort MK2 and Mark Williams in his replica of John Taylor’s Haynes of Maidstone liveried MK1 Escort, both of whom expect to be forming up on the grid at Knockhill. Bill Watson from RS Motorsport is currently building a Replica Ford RS200 in his Kent workshops and is looking forward to joining Rob Gibson on the grid as the Group B contingent grows.
Retro Rallycross will return to Lydden again at Easter as they form part of the proceedings at the FIA European Rallycross Championship. For a chance to win 2 free tickets to the Euorpean event visit the Retro Arena in the paddock during the BRC weekend 16/17 March.
Lydden Hill is the chosen venue for a special Retro Rallycross Vs Classic Hot Rod Challenge that will see the might of the classics compete against each other in their respective environments, dates for this and the Hot Rod venue are yet to be announced.
