Lohéac race circuit provided some great racing at the weekend for their first ever Rallycross Legends Festival. The event included the familiar Lohéac attractions with the usual parade through the village on Saturday afternoon.
Racing on both days provided lots of entertainment, the mix included rallycross, rally cars and demonstration machinery dating back to the birth of rallycross up to the Group B era.
Representing Retro Rallycross in the 2wd drive category was Gary Simpson, Terry Moore, Simon Hart, Rob Buckmaster, Tony Lynch and Jos Sterkens.
Hart arrived with his Ford Escort despite having technical issues that hampered him from taking up the drive he was looking forward to. The MK1, in its Haynes of Maidstone livery, proved to be a popular attraction as a static display.
Sterkens retired early due to engine failure leaving Moore, Buckmaster, Lynch and Simpson to take their earned positions in the 2wd Final.
Despite dominating throughout and winning 3 of his qualifying heats, a disappointed Moore was unable to finish the race with a broken driveshaft. Simpson took the win ahead of Retro Rallycross champion Tony Lynch with Buckmaster finishing 4th behind Frenchman Michel Gambillon in his Rally Simca
‘’The weekend did not go without its challenges’’ explained Simpson, ‘’from understeer due to worn out tyres, to a chronic misfire, each heat gave me issues. I managed to get it altogether for the final where I got a good start from pole and managed to be in the lead at the first corner. I could see Terry pulling over and was still being pushed by Tony, who jokered on lap 2 after which the gap between us was larger. I managed to hold the lead to the chequered flag. Terry had been the quickest of us all weekend and it was a shame to see the car break in the final. After watching my rear facing in-car camera after the race, I could hear the fuel pump screeching. I expect this was the high rpm misfire problem, being a lack of fuel. It was my first time racing at Lohéac, it was a very well organised weekend, the passion from the spectators and locals, especially during the drivers parade through the village is something to behold. It’s good to see rallycross here is still very passionate’’.
Terry Moore reflecting on the weekend said, ‘’Having won all my 3 heats, I was looking good for the win in the final, as I went into the first loose bend a driveshaft exploded, I managed to keep it in a straight line but that was the final over. I had a fantastic time, loved the track and the crowds. The commentators apparently nicknamed me the Red King. I can’t wait to go back again. Thank you to Retro Rallycross for making this possible and to the organisers at Lohéac for a making this a memorable weekend’’.
Group B can often be counted on as the major attraction of any race weekend and at Lohéac this was no exception. Retro Rallycross contenders included Pat Doran, Steve Harris, and Dave Halford, who joined the local contingent which included Legendary French driver and Lohéac organiser, Philippe Tollemer, in his Peugeot T16.
It was Harris, Tollemer and Doran that took the top 3 steps on the winner’s podium. The three are no strangers to racing together at the legends events creating quite a spectacle on track, you can expect to see this repeated when Lydden host the World RX event in July, where Group B will be one of the starring features.
Missing from the event was Rob Gibson in his Metro 6R4 who was excited at the prospect of returning to Loheac. ‘’I was disappointed when, at the last minute, I had to withdraw my entry. The trailer was loaded and race van ready’’ Gibson said. “The weekend was another classic Lohéac success with a fabulous mix of cars, the Retro Rallycross drivers had a great time. For some it was their first Legends experience, and they are already asking when they can join us again. I congratulate Philippe Tollemer and his team for organising such an enjoyable weekend and for the hospitality shown to our drivers. I now look forward to joining Retro Rallycross at Lydden Hill for the World RX in July, it’s going to be a fabulous event so get your tickets early’’.
