The Retro Rallycross Championship took its latest leg, and round 5 of the 2022 series, to the Glosso Circuit in Belgium last weekend, August 6/7.

This iconic venue played an important role during the 1980’s and 90’s hosting rounds of the FIA European Rallycross Championship.

Returning there after a 30-year break was an event that John Cross was very much looking forward to as part of his campaign to celebrate over 50 years in motorsport.

In the Retro category for cars under 1600cc, points leader Tony Lynch knew he had a tussle on his hands with the appearance of Terry Moore in his awesome Austin Mini; the pair who always entertain on track, were each determined to take the top step of the podium.

In order to do so they had to defeat Simon Hart who arrived in Arendonk for the first time off the back of a very successful appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Firle Beacon Supercar weekend and Rob Buckmaster, another newcomer to the Glosso circuit, looking to capitalise on his points score, in his Ford Fiesta MK2.

Nothing separated Lynch and Moore during the qualifying heats, each scoring two wins, but it was Terry Moore who brought the Mini home in first place in the final, after making a mega move on the Toyota MR2.

The Super Retro category provided equal exciting entertainment with Ludo Hermans joining Retro Rallycross for his first appearance, making up an entry consisting of John Cross, Jos Sterkens, Paul Pascoe and Vince Bristow.

Cross and Sterkens, each in determined mood, set the pace in the first qualifying heats. Close battles ensued that included a heart stopping moment when the Escort of Sterkens mounted the rear end of the Lancia. The pair each took a win in qualifying heats one and three.

Ludo Hermans was the first car home in heat two, Vince Bristow followed in his BMW with Paul Pascoe third and Jos Sterkens, in a race that John Cross failed to finish.

Cross was back out for heat four finishing in second place behind Hermans who took his second win of the weekend, with Bristow third followed by Sterkens ahead of Pascoe.

The final race of the day for Super Retro kept the drama going; Ludo Hermans took the early lead at the first corner, one lap later his car slowed to a walking pace until finally coming to a stop. Pascoe had also retired leaving Sterkens, Cross and Bristow to fight for podium positions that finished with  Sterkens taking the win ahead of Cross and Bristow.

“We were short on numbers but high on entertainment” said Shirley Gibson, “the teams who made the trip over to Belgium had a great time returning to this iconic rallycross circuit, capitalising on the opportunity to add to their points score. We welcomed a new driver in the form of Ludo Hermans who put in a sterling performance in the Super Retro class. We look forward to even more growth moving forward, we are a championship dedicated to ensure that the past has a future”.
