The latest rounds of the Retro Rallycross Challenge took part at the Mondello Park circuit in Ireland, as part of a double-header MSA British Rallycross Championship weekend.
On the back of a wonderful display at the British round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill, the Retro competitors were eager to get back in competition mode at the Irish circuit and provided fantastic action over the two days.
Barry Stewart dominated the Retro category at Mondello
Having resolved transmission problems that have plagued him of late, Porsche 911 driver Barry Stewart dominated the Retro final on both days of competition, having twice set two fastest heat times. 2014 John Button Memorial Trophy winner Ray Morgan claimed a fastest time on both days and pushed hard in the finals, but didn’t quite have enough to challenge on-form Stewart.
David Aitken was a welcome addition to the Retro family, racing the Vauxhall Astra originally built by Tony Bardy Motorsport and raced by Clive Richardson and Norman Beggs. Aiken was immediately right in the Retro mix at Mondello and had an exciting battle in Saturday’s final with giant killing Mini driver Lance Foster and another Irishman, Patrick Donoghue in a Peugeot 205.
Morgan finished second to Stewart with Aiken completing the podium. Foster had to overcome twice losing a rear wheel on his familiar Mini during the event, but the Green and White team were able to repair the car and Foster collected fifth place on Saturday, behind Donoghue.
Racing the 911 used by Rolf Nilsson to win the first British Rallycross Grand Prix in 1982, Stewart was untroubled in Sunday’s final and led from lights to flag. Aiken pressured the Escort of Morgan for second early on but dropped back on lap three, leaving Foster to finish third and Irishman Peter O’Brien fourth in his Peugeot 205.
The next round of the Retro Rallycross Challenge will take place at Pembrey in South Wales on July 18th.
