Former MSA Supernational champion Stuart Emery has swapped his familiar Peugeot 206 for a Volvo 242 to become the latest addition to the Retro Rallycross Championship.
With Retro Rallycross being the chosen championship for their return to the sport, the Emery race team wanted a car that would be fun to drive and equally good for spectators to watch as well as basic and simple to run. They decided on the Volvo 242 and set about trying to find one for sale.
Volvo’s history in rallycross dates to the 1970’s and was the first choice for John Taylor, who began his racing career in a Volvo Amazon. Petter Solberg also started his rallycross journey in a Volvo, driving a 240 in which he won the 1995 Norwegian Rallycross Championship. One of the last appearances of a Volvo 240 on British soil was at Lydden Hill in the British Rallycross Championship driven by Luc Maris.
“I’ve always loved watching the Volvo’s from Belgium and obviously the ones in Scandinavia, so started to put some feelers out to see what might be available. I was put in touch with Patrick Mertons in Belgium, and we quickly came to a deal. The car will run a 2.5L na engine and Sellholm 4 speed dogbox. LHD and RWD! Patrick built it during lockdown as a project with Jos Sterkens. I feel very lucky to have found it, knowing that it’s been built by guys with such good pedigree. All I’ve ever raced is RHD & FWD, so it will be a massive learning curve for me, but I’m really looking to it. A lot of the drivers I’ve raced against in the past are now in Retro, so it will be great to get involved with them all again. The event at Lydden on the 4th / 5th November will be my first time driving on the rallycross track, so if you’re watching and I make a hash of it, go easy on me!”
Retro Rallycross championship coordinator Shirley Gibson said “I learned some time ago that Stuart was planning to join us at Retro Rallycross and am really excited about the choice of car, it’s also great news to find that the team are now ready to race, with Stuart making his first appearance at next weekend’s firework finale at Lydden Hill. I have no doubt that being such a talented driver, and having got to grips with the Volvo, Stuart will prove to be competitive when he joins us for a full Retro Rallycross season in 2024.
