Part of the international Rallycross scene since the early 1970s, it’s fitting that Retro Rallycross competitors will race on the Duivelsbergcircuit at Maasmechelen this weekend, supporting the MSA British Rallycross Championship.
In the first year as a fully sanctioned points-scoring championship, two-time John Button Memorial Trophy Winner Ray Morgan holds a commanding lead in the Super Retro points race, but will face stiff opposition in Belgium from both Barry Stewart and Rob Gibson.
Stewart returned to the series for rounds three and four at Pembrey with technical troubles finally resolved on his ex-British Rallycross Grand Prix winning Porsche 911, and will be in with a chance of victory at Maasmechelen. Former FIA European Championship regular Rob Gibson will also be in the mix, driving his iconic MG Metro 6R4 outside the UK for the first time in a number of years
Young driver Jordan Bowes will return to the Retro family having missed the double-header at Pembrey in May due to mechanical issues with his immaculately prepared Volkswagen Golf. Bowes’ father Stewart will make it a family affair in Belgium by racing his Mini Clubman in the Retro Rallycross class, and has the opportunity to take the lead in the points.
Unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances, a number of Retro Rallycross drivers are unable to make the trip across the English Channel this weekend, but will be back out in force at the next round of the championship at Lydden Hill in August
Maasmechelen is a really good track and we’re looking forward to displaying the Retro Rallycross Championship to the Belgian fans, many of who have been supporting Rallycross for many years,” said Retro Rallycross Championship Manager, Shirley Gibson. “We also look forward to welcoming the Belgian spectators to our area where they can view our unique collection of Retro Rallycross models, which is a standard feature at our events. Sadly we have a smaller than usual entry, its not so easy for some drivers to take time away from work at this time of year. We are a very close team, camaraderie is great in Retro Rallycross and the drivers feel it when they have to compete without some of their team mates, but we have some wonderful cars making the trip and I’m sure they will put on a great show.”
