Jenson Button and David Coulthard, who will host the feature, made the film recently at Lydden Hill Race Circuit where Jenson and DC had their first taste of Rallycross in the Retro Rallycross V W Beetle of James Harrold. Despite attending many Rallycross events with his late Father, it was the first time that Jenson had been to Lydden Hill and joined by John’s friend Shirley Gibson it provided the perfect opportunity to take a trip down memory lane.
The VW Beetle is of course a car that JB Snr used in those early years. His exploits saw him battle against the very car that James Harrold competes in; the car has remained in the Harrold family ownership since being driven by his uncle, the late Peter Harrold. John Button and Peter Harrold were friends both on and off the track, which made the choice of Retro Rallycross car for Jenson’s use especially appropriate.
Ray Morgan ‘officially’ receives the John Button Memorial Trophy from Jenson Button
Jenson was also pleased to finally get his hands on the John Button Memorial Trophy which is the annual award presented to the Retro Rallycross Driver of the year. Current holder Ray Morgan joined the party at Lydden Hill where Jenson was able to make a personal presentation of the Trophy.
Jenson, who also took to the wheel of the 500bhp JRM World RX Mini and joined on track by David Coulthard in the Citroen DS3 of 4 times X-games medallist Liam Doran, later said:
”Today has been a mega experience and completely different to what I am used to. You need a huge amount of skill to drive theses cars – on your own it’s scary enough, never mind going up against four or five other drivers! “Rallycross is unbelievably competitive now, very professional and a lot of fun. “It’s a really exciting discipline and it’s growing again like it was in the eighties on both the British and World scene, which is great to see.”
The BBC programme rounds off an amazing season for the Retro Rallycross Team; back in May they entered the World stage when they took part in the FIA World RX Championship where they were joined by special guests Will Gollop and David Llewellin who led the team out on track in an ex Gollop 6R4 that is owned and has been restored to its former glory by Retro Rallycross team member Adam Keeler.
