The 2023 Retro Rallycross Championship got underway with rounds 1 and 2 at Lydden Hill for their traditional Easter Rallycross weekend.
The double header produced dry racing conditions on Saturday with Monday being reminiscent of the November 2022 meeting that was cancelled due to the severe wet weather.
Scottish racer Ian Biagi made a welcome return to the Retro Rallycross category in his familiar BMC Mini Clubman joining the Retro regulars, with Reigning Champion Tony Lynch in his Toyota MR2 and Terry Moore, returning in his Swift powered Austin Mini, picking up from where they left off last season going head-to-head and dominating the qualifying heats and finals.
It was Moore who took the win on day one in with Lynch second ahead of Dan Swayland, Ian Biagi and Simon Hart with Paul Buckmaster failing to finish in his Vauxhall Nova and Brother Rob not making it to the start line in his Ford Fiesta XR2.
Lady racer Pip Davey had a bad start to the season, failing to make it to the grid in her debut race, due to technical issues with the Peugeot 205GTi previously driven in the series by Husband Nigel.
With only two cars left running at the end of day two Lynch and Swayland joined the back of the Super Retro grid where Lynch finished a respectable third place behind the higher powered classic cars to take the overall win in his category.
The Super Retro Class was strongly supported where Lee Wood joined the series in his Ford Escort MK2 presented in the familiar livery of rallycross legend John Welch. Returning to Super Retro after a long break was James Harrold and his spectacular VW Beetle, which is always a crowd pleaser.
James Harrold dominated on day one, with Jamie McBain, Barry Stewart, and John Cross in hot pursuit. Gary Simpson brought his BMW MK3 to the grid as did a returning Belgian Jos Sterkens who was a guest entry and not to be counted in championship points. Triple Retro champion Ray Morgan Vince Bristow, Paul Pascoe and Allan Tapscott making up a bumper Super Retro grid. Nigel Davey, failed to make the start suffering with technical issues in his Triumph TR7.
Fastest in all qualifying races saw Harrold take pole position in the final which ended in disappointment due to rear suspension failure. Lee Wood took the win with Cross, Morgan and Simpson bringing the pack of Bristow Tapscott and Pascoe to the flag.
It was Sterkens who looked the strongest on day two challenged in the heats by close rivals, but it was Wood who took his second win of the weekend with Sterkens retiring on lap two that left the way clear for Cross to take the second place on the podium ahead of Simpson.
For rounds 3 and 4 the Retro’s will be heading over to Mondello Park.
