Ray Morgan in his Ford Escort BDA challenges the Beetle of James Harrold at Croft on 19th October
Fellow Team mates had tried their hardest to stop him. The competition was tough with the likes of Lance Foster, Barry Stewart, Rob Gibson, Ian Biagi, James Harrrold and the rest also in the running. But Morgan managed to overcome the opposition with consistent results and impressive performances that out drove the rest by the end of the season.
The Trophy had been the prize that all the Retro Rallycross Competitors had wanted to get their hands on since it was launched at Lydden Hill in March for the first round of the Ripla Retro Rallycross Challenge. The light-hearted banter between the team continued throughout the series as they all waited to see who would be crowned the Retro Rallycross Driver Of The Year.
The John Button Memorial Trophy
It was in January that the news broke of the very sad death of John Button, a popular and likable figure in varying disciplines of Motorsport; Autocross, Rallycross, Go Karting and of course F1.
When the Team came together for the first event in March Shirley Gibson was able to show off the Trophy to the Retro Rallycross Members and special invited guests, some of whom had raced against John in both Autocross and Rallycross. Giving his approval, former F1 Champion Jenson Button said ” I think this is a lovely idea, I am happy to have my Father’s name honoured in this way”.
The Trophy will be formally presented to Ray Morgan at the MSA ‘Night Of Champions’ Award Ceremony to be held at the Hilton Coventry on Saturday 31st January 2015. Morgan will keep the Trophy for a period of one year.
