Retro Rallycross joins MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix for season finale

The final event of the Retro Rallycross Challenge season takes place this weekend at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire, as the category supports the prestigious MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix.

Racing with the Grand Prix, which was first run in 1982 at Brands Hatch, is fitting for the Retro racers and none more so than for Barry Stewart, who’s Porsche 911 won the first ever Rallycross Grand Prix in the hands of Rolf Nilsson. Stewart has taken victory on three occasions so far this season and will be targeting a special win for the iconic Porsche at Croft.

2014 John Button Memorial Trophy winner Ray Morgan has also won in 2015 and will be challenging Stewart at the front in Sunday’s event, as will the Volkswagen Beetle of James Harrold. The former Stock Hatch champion won the first event of the Retro season at Croft in March. Harrold’s car has become one of the most recognised of the Retro machines after it was driven by Formula One star Jenson Button at Lydden Hill recently for a BBC TV feature which is scheduled to be aired during this weekend’s Russian F1 programme.

The Yorkshire event features a host of local drivers, many of which are more than capable of making it onto the podium this weekend. Popular giant-killer Lance Foster has had some poor luck in recent events and damaged his Mini heavily at Mondello Park and Pembrey, but knows the Croft circuit as well as anybody and could spring a surprise this weekend. Stuart Bowes will also return in his similar Mini. Of the other two Mini drivers on the grid, Ian Biagi travels from the Scottish boarder for the event while Ian Shelley makes the journey from the South East for his first visit to Croft of the season.

David Aitken made his Retro Rallycross debut at Mondello Park in June, driving his Tony Bardy Motorsport Built ex-Norman Beggs Vauxhall Astra, and makes the trip across the Irish sea to Croft, while local man Darren Grimston will compete in his Vauxhall Nova. Retro regular Paul Smith will contest the season finale in his Volkswagen Polo and Scottish driver Dave Black will return to action in his Vauxhall Astra.

Local father and son duo Neil and Terry Maynard will return to the Retro paddock for the first time since the Retro demonstration event at the British round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill in May, driving their pair of iconic Triumphs.

The final round of the season can be watched live online via Livestream with review programmes being aired on British Eurosport and Premier Sports following the event – listings and information will be published on the MSA British Rallycross Championship website.
